Holiday Favorite

Updated: Apr 11, 2023

Of all the things on my to do list around the holidays, making greeting cards is one of my favorites. Well, as of this year it’s become one of my favorites! Seeing this project through to the finish was a first for Jeddah and me, and I truly loved all of it.

We kept it super simple. Jeddah has this enormous stack of watercolor paintings from preschool, gorgeous colors. Using pinking shears or another version of fun texture snips, I cut out small sections of his paintings, a little shy of 3”x5” each. These were glued onto pre-cut blanks or thick, watercolor paper cut and folded to size. Glitter stars in a spray of complimentary colors made each card unique, dressing them up like a cute sequin clutch to your favorite LBD.

While scissors snipped away and the glue dried, hand-dipped beeswax candles burned on the mantle, cider mulled on the stove and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker played in the living room. Juuuuust a little holiday vibe going on over here!

Helping Jeddah stay connected to our friends and relatives by means of a piece of his own artwork, a simple personalized message and some glitter magic felt really nourishing. I loved the creative workshop-y vibe in our home that lasted for a few days while all the crafting supplies shuffled this way and that, never really getting cleaned up or put away. Sparkle butter on your toast for breakfast? Check!

I also loved checking in with our loved ones to update my address book. Jeddah practiced tons of life skills and had so much fun stuffing envelopes, licking them and pressing them closed. He also got fine-motor practice with peeling, placing, and pressing stamps. We felt such pride in all of our doings as we admired the stack of cards ready to go. We were joy-full together, placing each one into the slot at the post office and wondering about the mysterious adventure our letters would take up, on the wing.

Card making is the kind of gift-giving tradition whose warmth goes deep for the giver. I could feel it in my bones and I know we’ll do it again together next year.

Tra-di-tion! Tradition! From Fiddler on the Roof, can ya hear it?!
